Consumer fraud and identity theft are growing problems that threaten the financial security and well-being of all Americans, especially older consumers. Identity theft costs citizens billions of dollars and untold hours in recovery efforts. It can seriously damage credit ratings and cause extreme financial and emotional hardship for its victims. Fraud victims have lost out on job opportunities and occasionally are denied loans for education, housing, or cars because of false information on their credit reports.

Many don’t believe it could happen to them until it’s too late. Older consumers who are victims of fraud often find their retirement savings and investments at risk. Retirees are especially hurt by financial scams and other forms of fraud, because they often have more home equity and are less likely to be able to recover from any serious financial blows at this stage in their lives.

AARP is committed to raising consumer awareness about these crimes and to showing people how they can prevent scams from damaging their financial well-being.
